chet-hanks-2000Chet Hanks’ life has changed in a couple big ways recently. He confirmed he is father to a baby girl in an emotional Instagram video on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson explained why he kept the baby news under wraps and why is he coming forward now.

“I know I’ve not been active on the [Instagram] lately, because I’ve been figuring out my life, which is what we’re all doing, and social media’s all bulls— anyway,” Chet explained.

The rapper confirmed the news of his daughter, adding that her birth has inspired him to kick his issues with drugs and alcohol.

“I want to share something today because it’s about to be shared anyway in the press, which is the fact that I have a daughter,” he said. “I do have a daughter, she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, she’s the reason why I turned my life around and got sober. I’ve been sober for over a year and a half from everything.”

No disrespect to people that post their kids, I just I never wanted her to be dragged into the negativity surrounding my past.

Chet noted that he would continue to refrain from sharing photos of his baby girl.

“She’s not something to be posted,” he explained. “She’s something that I love, that’s changed my life but the fact is she’s about to be shared with everybody so I wanted you to hear it from me.”

“It hasn’t been easy making all my mistakes in public but I’m figuring it out,” he continued. “I’m doing the best that I can.”

A rep for Tom Hanks could not be reached for comment.

While Chet didn’t confirm the identity of his daughter’s mother, he took to Twitter to slam some “crass” portrayals of her, and calling her “one of the nicest people I know.”

“I’m just thankful that my daughter has such a great mom,” he wrote.

Chet, came clean about his struggles with addiction last year, admitting that he went to rehab over the summer. Tom, 60, applauded his son’s bravery in sharing his story.

“You got to applaud the bravery and honesty when it actually comes out of your own house,” he said.
